From Doubt About Her Music to hearing, “Major 21st Century Composer”

Situation/Problem:

Kathleen Ryan is a middle aged pianist, classically educated in music with a wonderful husband and a fabulous home and social life. Though very gifted, she had never consistently made any significant money with her music. She did not believe she could make money with her music and made no efforts to do so.

Though she had a rich and satisfying life, and wonderful friends and activities, her weight topped out over 200 pounds, and kept inching up. She never exercised and had little desire to do so.

Solution:

I did a lot of work with Kathleen on shifting her beliefs about earning money as a musician. She had a lot of blocks and a very ingrained defeatist attitude in this one area. However, she’s one of those great clients who quickly grows past anything in her way. It took a lot of work, but suddenly, one day, she became a business woman and began to earn income with her music.

She’s one of those delightful persons who catches fire when she catches on. She has become an excellent marketer of her Christmas CD, creating numerous venues to sell it during the holiday season.

She also began to create opportunities for paid performances, and we’re mapping out a realistic strategy to include 20 paid performances this year.

Recording a Christmas CD had taken quite a toll on her energetically and emotionally, but now, we’ve gotten her ready to effortlessly  record and market two more CD’s this year.

She’s an excellent composer, and people LOVE her music. She’s now making a small and steadily increasing passive income from selling her sheet music and music mp3’s online. Currently, she’s going through her years and years of compositions to see what else can be sold. Since the work’s already been done, it is simply a matter of notating the music in her software program and uploading it to her store on payloadz.com. Why not enjoy this "free" income? She’s strategically working on accessing music teachers (through the Professional Music Teacher’s Association) since her music is perfect for that market.

Last year, she spent a relatively frantic few weeks composing a major work for a friend’s concert. Her plans for this year include composing the second "book" for this same artist to perform this year. She just found out that she’s been named as the 2008 New Mexico Commissioned Composer, and will be paid an honorarium for that composition!

Soon after we started working together, I got her into a regular exercise program. This gave her quick results as she started looking smaller and feeling better pretty quickly. She’s now totally committed to her exercise program. Recently, we got her started on an eating program of smaller portions, eliminating junk food, sugar and soft drinks. She quickly got her weight below 200, and has lost another 12-15 lbs. Everyone is remarking on her weight loss. She’s sent her "fat jeans" to the thrift charity. She got through the holiday season with no weight gain! She’s down two sizes and recently decided to get to her target weight this year.
